Baby Boy Newborn Photography Session – What To Expect

When expecting moms reach out to me, they often ask or examples of my baby boy newborn photography images.  They want to see exactly what they can expect form their own baby boy newborn photography session with me.  Which I completely understand.  When you spend time looking online for examples of baby boy newborn photography, in places like Google images and Pinterest, expecting parents want to know exactly what props their photographer has available for their baby.

I love photographing baby boy newborn photography sessions.  While I am a sucker for little headbands newborn girls get to wear, styling a baby boy photography session is much more fun.  I get to mix textures, colors, add in some patterns, and dads love to incorporate special personal items to them (like things from their work or a hobby) into a baby boy newborn photography session.

Color Choices For Baby Boy Newborn Photography Sessions

In terms of colors, the most popular choices in my studio for baby boy newborn photography sessions are gray, blue, and green.   So, I have a lot of options available in those colors in the studio.  But I also have other colors that parents love to bring into baby boy newborn photography sessions too, like yellows, oranges, browns, blacks, and whites.

They ways we bring color into your baby boy newborn photography session is by adding it as a backdrop color, the color of a prop, decorative layering pieces in props or on backdrops, little outfits, and hats.

Personally, I love the look of a monochromatic set up for baby boy newborn photography sessions, but it is also fun to add in a pop of a contracting color instead of everything looking similar.

Baby Boy Newborn Photography Backdrop Options

I have a number of backdrops available for your baby boy newborn photography session.  I have over 100 different backdrop options for newborns total, and about half are ones that are typical colors and patterns selected for baby boy newborn photography session color choices.  I have grays in a variety of shades, from dark to lights.   Blues that ranges from dark midnight blues, to ones with a more teal look.  And greens that range from a light sage color to something darker like a forest green.  I also have a large variety of neutral colors for baby boy newborn sessions like creams, tans, and whites.  I always encourage parents to have at least one backdrop option in a light neutral color, just to always have an image that will display well in your home over the years if you choose to change your décor colors.

When your baby in posed in a fabric backdrop, another way to add in colors and textures to your baby boy newborn photography session is with layering pieces.  These are small pieces of fabric or layers that can be used in a number of ways.   Most commonly, they are used as a layering piece when I am posing the baby, to add some dimension to the image.  I will also use them as a layering piece over baby.  To give the perception that baby is covered up or tucked in.  It is also a great option for parents that do not want any nude images included in their baby boy newborn photography session but still want to see the baby’s details like back wrinkles and little arms and legs.

Prop Options For Baby Boy Newborn Photography Sessions

Props for your baby, I have a bunch of options.  For baby boy newborn photography sessions, one of the top choices is always a bucket pose.  It is a great way to pose your baby, and also incorporate the colors you want in your session.  I have an amazing bucket prop from a Wisconsin Company, Hello Little Props, that can quickly have the color of it changed, which makes for an easy way to swap colors in a baby boy newborn photography session.   Parents also love the look of a baby boy in a bucket, wearing a bonnet with the bonnet’s ties hanging down.

In addition to the metal bucket, another popular bucket pose option for baby boy newborn photography sessions is my wooden honey bucket.  I have a natural wood colored one, and one painted white.  Both are a great way to keep the traditional bucket pose in your baby boy newborn photography session, but to add a little more detail. The honey bucket is a little bigger, with a wider lip on the opening, so more of it is visible in images.

Next, we have the type of prop that baby lays in. These are the adorable images in baby boy newborn photography were there baby is wrapped and laying in a basket or box.  Adding colors and textures in these images is my favorite. Probably because I am a sucker for big and chunky knit layering pieces.  They are not only comfy for your baby to lay on, but they are also a great way to add texture and depth to your baby boys’ images.  I also love the look of layering pieces like cheese cloth in these types of baby boy newborn photography images.  It’s like cheese cloth still add texture, but blend into the backdrop a little more to let your baby boy take full attention in your images.

Additionally, these types of props and poses in a baby boy photography session also allow for the perfect time to use a cute outfit.  This amazing grey knit sleeper is a favorite of mine, and also a huge hit with parent in the studio.  I have it in a few other colors too – since it is so popular. It’s a great way to show off our little guy in his baby boy newborn photography session if you prefer that he stay clothed or covered up, opposed to the babies that are naked or more stripped down for their baby boy newborn photography session.

Another easy way to change the coloring or style in your baby boy newborn photography session is the type of floor drops used for prop images.  Most of my prop images are taken on a white wood floor or a dark wood floor.  These are perfect backdrops for props for bay boy newborn photography sessions because they complement the color choices used in the session very well, and because they are colors that display well in most client’s homes.  In addition to using the wooden floor backdrops, I often will use a simple color backdrop under the prop in baby boy newborn photography.  It adds another layer of colors and textured to the images, and can change the while feel of the image, like seen below.  In this session, we did almost the same set up for the baby boy newborn photography in a prop, but changed out the backdrop to get some variety.

Swaddles And Wraps for Baby Boy Newborn Photography Sessions

Another way to add colors and textures to baby boy newborn photography is through wraps.  Not only by the color choice of the wrap itself, but by also changing the style of the wrap.   There are a variety of different wrapping techniques I use in my baby boy newborn photography sessions.  The potato wrap is one where baby is either on a backdrop with the appearance of sitting upright, or it can also be used in a prop.  It’s called the potato wrap because baby look like a potato all wrapped up.  Another popular wrap is the pretzel wrap. This is one where baby’s sweet little toes are peeking out, and the wrap makes a crisscross design across their body.  I also wrap babies in a wrap style called the egg wrap, but not sure why it has that name. This is when baby is laying on their back in a prop or on a fabric backdrop, and the lower portion of their body is wrapped, keeping them all curled up.

Personal Items Can be Included In Your Baby Boy Newborn Photography Session Too

Lastly, a great way to style your baby boy newborn photography session is with things from your home.  Parents love to bring in items to their session that are meaningful to them, a specially made outfit, a handmade baby blanket, or have been an heirloom in the family.   Here are some recent examples of personal items parents have brought in for their bay boy newborn photography session and how we have incorporated them into the session.

Baby boy newborn photography sessions are so much fun to style.  I have so many props available in the studio for them too. All of the props used in the images (other than the heirloom item example images) are available in the studio for your baby boy newborn photography session. I also offer clients the opportunity to come view the studio, and all the props, in person before they even book a session with me.  I know that expecting and new parents have full plates, and a lot of questions and concerns, and I have found parents love the chance to see everything before they even book a session with me.
