A session like a Northfield Newborn Photography Session is one of the most popular sessions I get to photograph. It is always so much fun having newborn families in the studio, and it always means a little more when they drive a distance to let me photograph their little one. This family traveled to Northfield from Owatonna for their Northfield newborn photography session. They may not seem like much of a drive, but that drive from Owatonna MN to Northfield MN can see like forever when you are a new parent, and trying to keep you little one awake before the session so they sleep well during the session. I’m glad this Owatonna newborn baby boy came to visit me for their session.
Northfield Newborn Photography Session | Parent Posing With Newborn
Parent posing is always one of the first things we do at a Northfield newborn photography session. I like to get parent poses out of the way for a few reasons. First, it is warm in the studio during a Northfield newborn photography session. Like 80 degrees warm. That can get warm for parents, and posing close together holding a baby can make it seem hotter. I like to get pictures of parents before parents get too warm sitting in the studio for the length of a Northfield newborn photography session with can run 2-3 hours.
I always make sure that we get images of baby alone with each parent. After that, I focus on poses with both parents and baby. In this case, their first time photographed as a family of three.
Northfield Newborn Photography Session | Back lighting With Newborn Baby
One of my new poses I have added to Northfield newborn photography session is backlit newborn poses. These are a different take on the family portrait, and offer a different take on the pose in a more fine art style that looks great with current home decor trends.
Northfield Newborn Photography Session | Posing Baby In a Prop
Since baby was already wrapped for the first part of the Northfield newborn photography session, moving into wrapped baby poses was a natural progression. I am a sucker for all white set ups. There is something simple, clean, and timeless about all white props. This newborn baby boy was wrapped in white, then placed on a white layer, in a white basket, on a white floor. I like how the stripped back colors really allow the attention of the images to be on his face.
A popular props in the studio is the newborn moon posing props from Meadow & Ask Photography. She is based out of Canada, and her moon props are amazing and worth the extra shipping time with it being an international order.
This dark wooden basin was one of the very first newborn props I bought. I don;t even know hoe many years ago I bought it. Even being one of the oldest props in the studio, it remains one of the most requested. The dark wood colors of it are always a hit with parents at their Northfield newborn photography session, and it is often paired with green layering pieces.
Northfield Newborn Photography Session | Bean Bag Poses With Newborn
Poses of baby laying on the backdrop are commonly referred to as bean bag poses. This is because for many years, these poses were done on oversized beanbags that provided a large soft posing area for babies. I have not used a bean bag for years (I currently pose on a dog bed – which will be talked about more in an upcoming post on studio equipment). Bean bag poses are the most requested poses at a Northfield newborn photography session, mostly because they what people picture when they think of newborn photography images.
I like to keep color choices simple for bean bag poses during sessions. I love styling them with monochromatic colors, so they have a soft feel to them overall. It also lets me mix and match different shades of a color and see how well they all work together.
Northfield Newborn Photography Session | Awake Baby Poses
Sometimes babies don’t get the memo that they are expected to sleep most of their sessions. Some babies prefer to stay awake, and just stare at me during their Northfield newborn photography session. This little guy was one of the babies that decided that being awake was more fun than sleeping. Luckily he was pretty relaxed while being awake, and had some of the best facial expressions I have seen in the studio for a long time.
Northfield Newborn Photography Session | Detail Marco Images
These little close up photographs of newborn baby’s features are always favorites from sessions. Knowing how fast babies grow and change, I love taking a few minutes during a Northfield newborn photography session to focus on their little features and document exactly what they looked like in those first few weeks and days of their birth. I am a sucker for those little nose profiles, baby toes, their eye lashes (which most of the time as amazingly long and give me lash envy), their little fingers, and all the rest of the little things that are so easily identified as newborn features.
